AHC: The Second Fitna fractures the Islamic Empire

Is it possible for the Second Fitna to end not just in an Umayyad defeat but with the areas ruled by the Umayyad Caliphate to be divided between the Alids and Zubayrid dynasties and a Kharijite state?

Hmmm... I don't know much Islamic history, especially early history, but that would certainly shake things up considerably. The Middle East would rapidly be unrecognizable, and Europe would likely be totally weird by 1200.

A Kharjite state would be a nasty thing to see - they'd seriously mess up Islam if they managed to gain any footing to put their ideas in place. Didn't they think all other Muslims were unbelievers and worthy of death?

Cheers,
Ganesha

The Kharjites are really interesting and I've always thought of them as being similar to some of the more radical protestant denominations that appeared during the reformation with there belief that sin was the same a unbelief and that sinners needed to repent and that anyone who is a devout Muslim could be elected Caliph.

I wonder what the impact of a state that supports idea of women Imāms would have on the Middle East?

Could be very interesting to see a successfull Kharjite Sect grab some land for long enough time for it being accepted to have female Imams, and to see how this would interact with religious entries from other places.
