AHC: The North Rebels

All on the tin. With a POD no earlier than February 12, 1848, have the New England states* rise in armed rebellion against the government in Washington. (They can be seceding, trying to launch a revolution, whatever.)

*The New England States: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont.

Extra points for New Jersey, New York, and/or Pennsylvania joining in the rebellion.

Super-bonus points for any other states fighting against DC.

I think if you can somehow make the Southerners appear even more influential in the US government than they do in 1860, perhaps with a 2000-style election that has to go to the Supreme Court to be settled where Justice Taney casts a decisive vote, you *could* pull it off. William Garrison wrote a very terse editorial in the 1840s about "no union with slaveholders" and the sentiment is there to create a powerful movement to that effect. You would probably have New England and perhaps New York involved, from there I'm not so sure.
