AHC: The Kaiser comes back instead of Hitler

you challenge is to make Imperial Germany lose WW1 very similarity to OTL, but instead of Hitler taking power, the Kaiser comes back.

I’d say using the “stabbed-in-the-back” myth even more would be important. Blame the generals. WW2 might start sooner since convincing UK and French people that we can work with the Kaiser might be hard after WW1 just got finished.

Munich Putsch turns into a March on Rome-lite coup led by Ludendorff. He takes power and decides to bring back the Kaiser (Wilhelm III) as a patriotic figure for the German people to rally behind. All ideas from a TL I'm currently planning.

THAT would be interesting to see, how you manage it to happen in your TL.

Well, a return of Kaiser would trigger not just France but Britain

Maybe not in Real life if he is only a figurehead?

Some other PODs include:

  • Stalin dying in the Russian Civil War
  • Harding survives
  • The Democrats nominate McAdoo in 1924
  • The Liberals do better than Labour in the 1923 UK general election, so Asquith forms the government n January 1924.

That would actually be a really interesting POD.

But for a successful Munich Putsch we need a POD in 1918/1919 imho.

Maybe the SocDems are able to "win" against the Spartakists without relying on the Freikorps. "Win" is a flexible term here. They reach a negotiated settlement or the Uprisings are much weaker.

The important point is that the old bureaucracy and the Reichswehr/Freikorps are more alienated. The Munich Putsch just triggers a nation wide uprising that Ludendorff leads.

It's not really a Munich Putsch. I basically envisioned it as Ludendorff copying the March on Rome, but in Berlin.

Hitler is killed during the Beer Hall Putsch. Without Hitler's charisma, the NSDAP never gains the same prominence as OTL causing the DNVP take power instead and restore the Kaiser.
