AHC: The HRE includes all of Christendom

What would it take for the Holy Roman Empire to include all Catholic nations? Presumably it would entail major backing from Rome (and/or the Pope being the Emperor's bitch), and the major kingdoms receiving elector status.

Did the Pope not in reality rule a "holy" "empire" from his seat in "Rome" calling on armies to attack the hethens with "crusades"

The title says "all of Christendom", which is NOT feasible, at all.

The first post says "all Catholic nations", which is. Although even that's hard. However Charlemagne's empire, the original HRE, was supposed to be that. You probably can't avoid a split or two, but maybe they can be re-united (by conquest or by marriage).

If they can do THAT, and avoid the mini-collapse after the first blooming, you might get it to expand so that it did, in fact, include all Catholic nations.

The obvious bullshit backwards-answer would be for Christianity to be eradicated from everywhere but the HRE. Perhaps a scenario where the HRE continues to include France and Italy, and Christianity never takes hold in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, or the British isles; the Byzantines swiftly fall to Turkish invasion and are thoroughly converted to Islam, and Iberia goes full permanent Muslim. That would do it. Of course it's a little contradictory, since an HRE robust enough to hold onto France and Italy would be too strong to countenance pagans to the north; but perhaps you could preserve the scenario by having the HRE somehow inexplicably strong enough to conquer and control Britain and Scandinavia. At that point the HRE's claim to be the successor of Rome would be pretty damn legit.
