AHC: The Eisenhower Dynasty.

I never before realized how deeply involved in policy the Eisenhowers had been before today. That led me to this thought: What if the Eisenhowers had a political dynasty along the lines of the Kennedys, Bushes and Roosevelts? I don't think I've seen that one before!

The challenge here is to get two or more members of the Eisenhower family elected to office, or the Presidency.

(I also wouldn't mind seeing if someone could do an actual thread on this, a storyline).

While Nixon is political poison after Watergate, if that happened, he presumably still had a lot of influence with the movers and shakers of the party. Could he help his daughter's husband David get elected?

I once read that David Eisenhower's college teachers all used to say "When David is President..." Not if, just when - he was that impressive.

But I think any association with Nixon, even by marriage, would be a drag. And AFAIK, he had no political ambitions.

Joe Kennedy was an Irish Catholic in a WASP run country. He wanted in, he wanted his sons to rise. Ike never had that sense of being an outsider and it wasn't in his nature to be a dynasty builder; he would have been amused if anyone suggested it. He was personally ambitious but in a very different way from Joe Kennedy. His son became a fine military historian and seems to have been content with that. I recently saw a cable TV show in which David and Julie, both authors, were speaking at a history forum; they seemed very smart and gracious--like academics more interested in writing books than becoming chairman of the department. I'd bet both of them have zero interest in running for public office. Good for them, although Julie running for office and rising high would make an interesting AH scenario--I don't think being the daughter of Nixon would have hurt her if she'd had the ambition.

Nice analysis.

I dont think anyone is suggesting that he try to build a dynasty but the fact of the matter is that kids often take up their parents profession. My wife and her brother are fourth generation preachers, and one of my nephews is a fourth generation doctor.

NB in both my family and my wifes there was no pressure to join the 'family business', if anything mild discouragement.
