Your challenge is this:

With a POD no earlier than July 26, 1948 (the start of the ‘Turnip Day’ Congressional Session that Truman called) make than the 1950s a period of dysfunction, division, and chaos in the United States. Like 1968 but longer.

Bonus points of no nukes go off at home or abroad, b/c that’s a bit obvious.
