AHC: Templar Canarias

How 'bout this:

1418, Henry the Navigator as Grandmaster of the Order of Christ leads an expedition to the Canaries. They succeed in subduing the island and establish a base for future exploration/conquest.

It's not the Templars, but it is one of their main successor orders.

Meh, the real Templars would be much better, I only give you half a point.

make templar knight by the burds from an obscure tradesmen???

(or forge a mentality to search for a way to attack the muslims in the back, en make them sail to the isle??)

One thing I can think of is making the Spanish reconquista succeed much earlier, thus at the time the crusades happen in the Levante, Christian knights are also fighting from Christian outposts in Morocco.

It is well possible that a Europe-spanning organization like the Templars are engaged there as well, which provides the first opportunity for Templar Canarians. Furthermore, the Templars might concentrate their forces there once they get kicked out of the Holy land (say they hold some outposts on the Morrocan coast). To harass Morrocan coastlines, to attack the Muslims from South, to contact possible allies against Morroco and not the last to contact that fable prester John the Templars might engage in seafaring on the Atlantic and base themselves on the Canaries and the Capverdes.

Would be a cool timeline - but what TL wouldn't be cool with surviving knights Templars...
