Do you have a source? I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.
I can't give any exact sources I'm afraid (don't have the books anymore) but at least three books on Greenlandic history, of modern making, that I've had not too long ago said that there were birch forests on Greenland, which much like the ones in Iceland were wiped out due to the Norse's large demand for wood.
I also remember reading that at least a few logging trips to the American mainland was made, which would be rather interesting.
