How could a religion originating below the Sahara become widely practiced north of it?

Bonus points if African art influences the religious symbols of that religion.

Well, first of all you need to have an organized proselytizing religion develop, IOTL Traditional African religions are a mixture of regional beliefs passed down orally and a few semi-organized religions in small regions.
