AHC: stop or reverse Plessy vs. Ferguson

While the details are rather lengthy here (see, for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plessy_v._Ferguson for a summary), how would one prevent the "separate but equal" doctrine and thus Jim Crow from becoming established? Note that it was very rapidly recognized as being followed only as far as the letter of the law was concerned, as evinced by this 1904 John McCutcheon cartoon:

Concept is a nice thought but it was inevitable that some form separate but equal ruling would come about.

The sad reality was middle class and upper class coloureds/blacks at the time thought they could legally get their way equality. In the most perfect of circumstances they themselves created, they failed to realize how strong the need to uphold white superiority was in the south.
