AHC: Spain retakes Gibraltar

If Britain gets Tangiers or all of Morocco somehow they may be convinced that they don't need the rock anymore.

Spanish dictatorship survives bit longer and ally with Argentina. When Argentina invades Falkland Spain invades succesfully Gibraltar and Brits are unable to do anything. Perhaps if yet Ireland decides invade Northern Ireland.

Well, that's Article 5 of the NATO treaty invoked on 2 counts, Spain would most likely gain the title of "Shortest Occupier in History" as it rapidly gets bitch-slapped by NATO, Ireland on the other hand will displace Zanzibar as the holder of the "Losing the shortest war in History" crown.

June 1940 Franco contacts England and makes secret treaty. No axis forces in Spain or its territories and England returns Gibraltar after war ends. Treaty signed by both the Prime Minister and the King. Has to be right When England was at its greatest amount of fear for any chance to work.

Nerf 20th century Britain and Spain picks up Gibraltar whenever the Spainsh bother to without a fuss.

Portugal did nothing to stop the loss of Gao, Damien, Diu, East Timor, and Macao because 20th century Portugal was weak and could do nothing to hold colonial enclaves if their stronger neighbors wanted them.

Franco should be idiot even trying such thing. Spain needs too much of British and American supplies that it dare annoy Brits. Even CHamberlain wouldn't accept that and laugh Franco out of Downing Street 10. Churchill would blow cigare smoke to Freanco's face and warn about serious consequences if he let even one Wehrmact soldier step to Spanish soil.

WWIII breaks out, the UK gets badly damaged while Spain remains neutral and emerges relatively unscathed. After waiting a bit for the fallout to dissipate, Spain sends out a couple of guys to plant their flag in the rubble, Britain objects but isn't in a state to do anything about it, and by the time they are the government has decided it's not worth a war with Spain.

I have never understood why spain is so adamant about taking Gibraltar, all it ever does is make the case for Morocco taking ceuta and melilla more logical.

Well, have some Franco German alliance totally smash the British empire in an alt ww1 with some late 1800s pod. The spoils are mostly split between France and Germany obviously, but perhaps they give Spain Gibraltar as an extra middle finger to Britain.

What about Spain joining the central powers in WW1? Having them delay the British in the Mediterranean would help the Ottoman forces. It may put pressure on Italy to side with the central powers (promise Nice and the other territory (blanking on the name)). Could Spain and Italy draw off enough troops so that Austria and Germany knock out Russia quicker? Would the British Navy stay to protect Gibraltar or go after the Ottoman forces?

Whats in it for Spain in the long run?

Unless something happens that knocks Britain off the top spot before WW2 then the British Empire hoovers up Spanish possessions and sweeps their ships from the seas.

When the dust has settled as part of the treaties I expect Gibralter gets handed back.

Even after WW2 its not exactly a Goa situation as Argentina found out

Perhaps if yet Ireland decides invade Northern Ireland.

Such wit ;)
