AHC: Spain Joins NATO Earlier

As some of us may know, the United States pursued rapprochement with the Franco regime in the early years of the Cold War, and Nixon issued a public statement mourning El Generalissimo's loss.

Yet Spain only formally joined NATO in 1982, the first entrant since West Germany in '55.

So your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to have a Francoist Spain join NATO with a POD no later than January 1st, 1950.

No one in Europe would accept Francoist Spain in NATO during the 50s.....Franco was seen as "the remaining facist" and Spain was no critical to the Western Europe safety....so, the only way is to avoid having Franco in power after WWII or something almost ABS, transform Spain as essencial to the security of the Capitalist Bloc (something crazy as a communist Portugal or Morocco)....

Thought I'd invoke the OP's "right to life" clause and dust off this old chestnut.

Anybody up for the challenge?

Franco pulls a Pinochet and agrees to abide by a referendum that votes him out of power. This would be interested, since Juan Carlos wouldn't be old enough for Franco to bypass his father as the appointed monarch.
