Congress fails to come up with a good replacement for the Articles of Confederation, which causes essentially a dissolution of the nation into seperate countries after a few controversies hit the really weak central government. Bigger states like New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia eventually grow in strength, and some groups of states like OTL New England unify due to cultural similarities. Alternatively only the north successfully gains independence due to the south being home to more loyalists. They become the Dominion of Dixie or secede from the UK over slavery.
