AHC: Socially Liberal South, Socially Conservative North

The South is considered to be Socially Conservative while the North is considered to be Socially Liberal. How could that be changed?

I believe the roots go back to the initial colonization in the 17th century. Certainly, not in the form we would recognize, though.

I'd recommend reading Albion's Seed by David Hackett Fischer.

Need to make the South more urbanized than the North somehow. While the trend isn't absolute, the correlation between urbanization and liberalism is pretty strong.

Send different settlers to different places. I feel like a lot of American history can be explained by the fact that the South was colonized by Ulsterites.

You'd need different issues and topics to define social conservatism and social liberalism to make this work post 1900. Perhaps abortion becomes very important to mainline Protestants and not at all important to Evangelical Protestants, framing it as a Catholic issue for the most part. Having more race riots in the North might create a more racialized society and contribute to social conservative beliefs would also help.
