AHC: Small warship US Navy

The task is to have the US Navy maintain small warship squadrons. The Navy will use in wartime, then drops them. A recent example is the Seafighter, a brown-water design that remains unarmed despite Congress setting aside money to arm and test the ship. How can this hate-on be stopped?

Perhaps an successful Air Cushion Gun boat gets the support of the Marine Corps, since it can get fire support right onto the beach?

Or a lasting operation in confined waters, let´s say an anti-piracy operation in indonesian waters? A sufficent number of big ships would be a huge waste of resources in that case.

Well my knowledge of US politics is very limited, but I believe there was a discussion immediately after WWII about reducing the Navy to a mere escort service, and having the Air Force as the main war fighting service.

There's no reason for having a Navy and Marine Corps. General Bradley tells me that amphibious operations are a thing of the past. We'll never have any more amphibious operations. That does away with the Marine Corps. And the Air Force can do anything the Navy can do nowadays, so that does away with the Navy.

So get rid of this and the Korean war - and perhaps the US Navy stays as an ASW fleet? :)
