You could always have the Magyars ultimately settle down somewhere other than Pannonia - a place with a higher population density inhabited by Slavs. As with the Turkic Bulgars of our world, they will initially retain their culture as a ruling class, but eventually assimilate into the local population.

I am not sure about Romania but Hungary is possible. No Magyars in the Pannonian Basin or just in Transylvania and East of the Tisza River.
