AHC: Singapore Wank

Have you asked any Swiss people how competent they think their government is? :p

Don't dodge the issue- you were comparing Singapore to large developing nations, I (and the Singaporean government) compare it to a small but economically powerful first world economy, which is a far more appropriate comparison and one in which Singapore falls horrifically short. I'm sure the Swiss government has it's own share of incompetence. However, it also gives its citizens universal healthcare, a reasonable welfare system and a sterling level of personal liberties.

Here we have the highest paid politicians in the world taking no steps to help out with costs of living for the lower middle and working classes, inflating a massive real estate bubble, allowing workers to suffer in horrific labour conditions, displaying a complete lack of transparency with taxpayer monies (billions may have been lost over the past decade but no one knows because they won't show the accounts), stifling the political opposition and denying us freedom of speech and expression.

Singaporeans were brought up with the idea that the checks on freedom and liberty were a quid pro quo for stability, prosperity and economic growth. The government has increasingly displayed an inability to provide these so by it's own rhetoric it needs to go. It's lost the Mandate of Heaven, so to speak.

beyond the fact that it may be true or not that Singapore is fooling the world and its people that it is a great country, this is a thread for singapore-wanks. We are not assuming a future situation where Singapore attacks Malaysia or the sea, we are making a scenario(as we always do) where, perhaps, a Malay Peninsula is a Chinese-dominated state independent from Malaysia(this counts as a Singapore-wank).

The only way this is possible is with a POD right after WW2, in which the Straits Settlements are not united with the Malay States. However, unless the Brits wish to cling to Singapore, Penang and Malacca like they did Hong Kong, this is unlikely, as they could not survive as a single independent state.

The Chinese population in Malaya as a whole at best only ever made it to around 25%.

Unless the Chinese population moved en masse south and swarms Johor (ASB), there could not be a Chinese majority independent state.

zeppelinair just said Chinese-dominated, not necessarily a Chinese majority.
i.e. the Chinese minority would hold the majority of the political and economical power

Well, they already hold most of the economic power in Malaysia... Malay ("bumiputra") equity is supposedly still less than 30%, according to the government. But I can't see how they could ever dominate politically in Malaysia (or any plausible POD to make that happen).

Why look North didn't Singapore historically trade with Sumatra? Have the northern part of Sumatra become part of the Straits Settlement.

You need to fiddle the Anglo-Dutch treaty of 1824. Trouble is the existing Sumatran trade posts were unprofitable which is why the British were eager to sign them off in exchange for Malacca and Singapore
