AHC: SCOTUS Justice Elected President

Pretty straightforward, the challenge is to have a sitting Supreme Court Justice elected president. Bonus points if it's a justice who hasn't held prior elected office.

I'll lose the bonus points here, but if you have a very conservative court (say Reagan gets Bork and Souter turns out conservative) where O'Connor is far from being a swing vote and is essentially powerless, I could see O'Connor decide to try for the Presidency in 1992 or possibly be VP while being groomed to be President in 1996.

Hughes in 1916 is an obvious choice, but others I could see would be William O Douglas, Earl Warren, and Chief Justice Roberts (who would win the bonus points).

It would take an almost apocalyptic level of Watergate-level scandals in both parties executive and legislative branches for a "philosopher-king" type like sitting justice to run for and win the Presidency.

Hmmm...Well, Eral Warren is an obvious one, but any path that leads him to the Presidency will probably avert his Supreme Court work...

Stassen does better in 1948, not good enough to win, but he's the real deal-maker at the convention. He meets with Dewey and says he wants a supreme court seat if he wins. Dewey accepts, and this time he campaigns better. Dewey ends up winning and Stassen replaces Murphy on the bench. Ike doesn't run in 1952 but Stassen sure does! Stassen wins in 1952, has a successful eight years and his VP puts him back on the bench in 1962 when he becomes president.
