Despite its high profile, the Church of Scientology is reported to have fewer than 60,000 active members in the United States, and its prospects for future growth are unlikely, given its reputation as a sinister cult. But could it have gone differently? With a POD after 1954, create a situation in which Scientology (in some recognizable form) becomes a numerically significant and "mainstream" religious community. It should be at least as successful as OTL Mormonism, with about the same level of mainstream acceptance.
