So I've been thinking lately again about the troubles of the Roman Empire in the early 5th Century, and if and how the Western part of the Empire could have been avoided. I'm looking to do this with no PoDs prior to the death of Theodosius in January 395. And what I'm specifically looking for is if the Crossing of the Rhine in 406 (or 405) -- and subsequent carving of the Empire by Vandals, Visigoths, Alans, etc -- can be avoided. Bonus points for also avoiding the Sack of Rome (410). Obviously, I'd also like both Romes to be in a better position to deal with the Huns than they were 440-53.

Some ideas:
  • supposing Stilchio had beaten (or even just check-mated) Alaric in any of his campaigns against him (395, 397, or 402)?
  • supposing Eutropius hadn't fallen from power in 399?
  • supposing the rebellion of Constantine in Britain (circa 406 OTL) had been timed differently?
... or something else, maybe?
