Pedro II didn't wish to abdicate the throne, he felt he had to reign until he died, much like Elizabeth II today.

The impression I have is that was a consequence of his male heirs dying. If one of them survives, it's reasonable to assume things might be different(of course, that is based on my impression being right).

I think you are right. While Pedro II probably believed that it was his duty to reign until his death (as Drake said) it's very clear that after his first travel to Europe in 1871 he became more uninterested in the government. If he had a son he probably could have abdicated and with the excuse of "medical reasons" he probably would spend more time abroad.
