For some time, sandwiches were associated with gambling and drinking, but then they started appearing among polite society. Your challenge is to have the sandwich keep its somewhat disreputable reputation for at least a while longer.
Bloody hell what was our lazy food that was more satisfying than a snack but not a full meal? Beans?Tacos were somewhat disreputable up until the mid 60's and the advent of Taco Bell, where Tacos were "made by white people instead of greasy Mexicans (direct quote from the founder)."

My grandad used to eat beets. Like. The bastard would just grab a tin of sliced beets and eat them right out of the can in front of God and everybody.Bloody hell what was our lazy food that was more satisfying than a snack but not a full meal? Beans?

Just curious, what amounts to “polite society” if the upper classes all over Europe had been heavily engaged in gambling and cards games were an accepted and popular social activity?
I'd like a sandwich but I really don't feel like eating two whole loaves of bread...Never have machined sliced bread be made available.
Maybe they would only be eaten whilst the ladies of polite society were not present?
