Your challenge, with a POD of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, is to make northern Yemen a Russian protectorate and/or colony.

Couldn't the British, under the right conditions, cripple any Russian fleet based at Yemen that threatens the Suez Canal?I do not see this happening as Britain would have a fit as it was expanding the Great Game.
Simply because Britain has a fit doesn't mean the Russians can't impose a protectorate over northern Yemen. Couldn't the British, under the right conditions, cripple any Russian fleet based at Yemen that threatens the Suez Canal?
Would there be a situation similar to Libya where the Ottomans send officers and other specialists to organize guerrilla warfare against colonial authorities?Coaling facilities for such a squadron for be difficult. I can see Britain also backing the Ottomans over this Russian demand.
An important question is why does Russia want this. Are talking a coaling station? there is limited availability for trade, so other than being able to take it from the Ottomans I do not see how it fits for the Russians.

I was planning for a Russian Yemen in order for Russian Yemen to function as a base where Russia can expand into the Horn of Africa.
That was the plan, having the Russian colony of Sagallo succeed.if your goal is a Russian horn of Africa you are better off having Russia acquire Djibouti before France. i can't really see a way or even a reason why they would acquire north Yemen.
