AHC: Russia a better showing in the Napoleonic Wars

My limited understanding of the Napoleon's invasion of Russia is that he essentially played into the hands of the Russian Army. That might be revisionist history though. The Russians allowed the French to move further and further into Russian territory and then bled them dry in set engagements. So far from home the French weren't able to recover losses and eventually had to retreat. A lot of people even call it the war that broke Napoleons back.

The criticism of the Russian strategy however was the loss of Moscow and other important cities. Was it possible with a PoD 1790 to stop the French from even crossing the border or barring that taking Moscow?
