AHC: Rump Byzantine Empire lasts to present day

Pre-Greek Independence, wasn't there a 'Balkan Federation' idea floating around in the states under Ottoman rule? Of course, for it to succeed would be pretty out there, but I can see a possible name for it being 'Romania', and one of the ways to increase sentiment for the idea would be to emphasize the common Byzantine heritage and religion.

Even with just Thrace and Constantinople, Greece could justify calling itself the new Byzantine Empire. The de facto capital would probably be Athens, since Constantinople(now probably known as Byzantine) would be too close to a possibly revanchist Turkey

Why in the name of Emperor Constantine the Great would they rename their capital at all?

In general to everyone here:
Why would they ever use the word "Byzantine". If their king would have adopted the title emperor and make Greece an empire it would just be named "Greek Empire" or something fancy sounding like "Empire of the Greeks and R(h)omans"

It merely has to consider itself the successor state to the Byzantine Empire. So in Greek, I guess it might call itself "Neo-Rhomania," or whatever. That would probably get translated as "New Byzantine Empire," I suppose.

You do realize that modern Greece considers itself a successor state to the Byzantines right?

Muhammad the Conqueror goes along with the idea of having a puppet, Morea-based Greek state ruled by Palaiologoi.
