AHC: Roosevelt vs Roosevelt

How do you get a scenario for an FDR vs TR matchup?

Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. ("Ted") doesn't campaign for Hoover while Governor of the Philippines. This pretty much scuttled his career there and wrecked his chances for political office.

He runs in 1940 against Cousin Franklin on preparedness and no foreign ties.

Bonus is the outgoing First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, grudgingly greeting the incoming First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. (That's right, Mrs. Ted was Eleanor Roosevelt.)

I presume that you mean a matchup for POTUS, so, TR lives a longer and healthier life, wins in '20 and is nominated for a 4th term in '24. That year his cousin, FDR wins the Democratic nomination. Americans gets to decide which Roosevelt they're gonna row with.

would be interesting to see the ballots in an election where both candidates have the same last name

TR vs. FDR is ASB. FDR vs. TR Jr. is probably easier to pull off, but still is weird IMO. The office TR Jr. ran for in 1924 was the same his cousin would accede to four years later. Their fortunes seem relatively intertwined.

Although you could always do what Major said.

A direct matchup between TR and FDR is most likely impossible however if TR lives longer and gets the Republican nomination in 1920 then he would be running against a Democratic ticket with FDR in the VP spot, assuming that the Democrats still nominate him for VP. They might want to try and draw some of that Roosevelt name recognition and charisma to the Democratic side. TR most likely wins though.

I read about FDR that he got nominated for the VP on the 1920 ticket because TR was dead and they thought a Roosevelt name would work. In theory therefore if TR is not dead, the boost wouldn't work, but they might go for it to match a young, vibrant Roosevelt against an older, fat Roosevelt

But, FDR has a national profile already in 1924 that might make his tenure as governor unnecessary.
