AHC: Romanian-Hungarian Union.

Semi-random thought that I had; what if, at some point, Romania and Hungary had been tied into some sort of political union? The scenario can have a POD at any time after the fall of the Roman Empire, but bonus points if you can get one in the Industrial Age(from say, 1780 onwards).

LOL - at some time the Russians and Austrians decide to take on the Ottoman Empire one more time and Austria gets the spoils in form of the Moldocva and Walachia ;)

Considering an early PoD, wouldn't the union be the Kingdom of Hungary-Wallachia(-Moldavia?)? My PoD in mind is between 1760 and 1800.

There are probably possibilities for a POD in the fourteenth century. That, however, might prove difficult given the various pressures faced by Hungary and the Danubian states historically from the Austrians, Venetians, Turks, Poles, and Russians historically.

The Bolshevik revolution pours into Europe after an RSFSR victory in the Russo-Polish War, most of Eastern Europe comes under Bolshevik control. The Hungarian and Rumanian Soviet Republics are merged into an entity similar to LitBel, which dissolves within a year into Romania and Hungary again after much internal objection.

Basarab I doesn't break free from Charles Robert's Hungary, same with Moldova later on. The two are integrated into Hungary over time, Romanians becoming an important percentage of the Kingdom's population. Hungary fares better against the Ottomans and doesn't end up under the Habsburgs. During the Modern Era, the Romanians somehow achieve political recognition in the Kingdom and the Hungarian king crowns himself as King of Romania creating the dual monarchy of Hungary-Romania (oh yeah, Hungary lost Croatia at some point).

John II never abdicates his title; instead, his heir rules the (Zapolyan) Kingdom of Hungary until the 1590s, when a series of bad decisions and bad luck culminate in a Wallachian invasion in which this last Zapolya is deposed and the nobles of the realm elect the Wallachian Prince Michael Viteazul to the throne. Around 1600, Michael improves relations with Poland-Lithuania, allowing him to seize Moldavia.

Thus, as in OTL, Michael rules over a union of Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania - but since the Zapolyas never relinquished their title, Transylvania/Partium is de jure the Kingdom of Hungary and Michael's actual title is Prince of Wallachia and Moldavia and King of Hungary. This heavily Romanian-dominated Romanian/Hungarian union would last for at least a decade or so, and with Polish backing, Michael and his heirs might even be able to gain a foothold in actual Hungary and successfully resist both the Ottomans and the Habsburg King of Hungary's inevitable machinations.

If Michael manages to secure and consolidate this new realm, it's not very far-fetched to believe, that at some point, we're gonna have a fourth Rome and another race to liberate Constantinople from the Ottomans. The more pressing issue, though, is the one about religion. How will Michael manage the heavily catholic popoulation of Hungary-proper?

Would they even need to be managed in some special way, or could Michael just subordinate the existing Catholic institutions and proclaim religious equality?

Another thing he might want to consider is creating a separate Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate. The Ecumenical one in Constantinople probably won't be able to safely and efficiently govern the Romanian churches, due to the more or less constant hostility between Romania-Hungary and the Ottomans. And it's about time to introduce a Romanian-language liturgy.

All of that sounds good to me, I think.
