Today King Micheal I of Romania died at age 96. He had been King of Romania until 1947 when Romania's pro-Soviet government forced him into exile. Micheal returned to Romania in 1992, after the end of Communist rule, and, during his brief visit, was so well regarded that the new government refused to allow him to return to Romania.

Anyway, this all got me to thinking- what if more Eastern European nations had restored their monarch following the collapse of Communism? I know Prince Micheal of Kent has always dreamed of becoming a Romanov, for instance.

I compiled a list of Warsaw Pact members, and who the claimant was to the former throne in 1991, when the Warsaw Pact dissolved.

Looking over the list I'd say Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland are pretty much dead in the water. Germany would be a loooong shot. I'm not so such about Russia, and the other former USSR states. Albania did have a referendum on becoming a monarchy, so I'd give it a maybe? But I think with minor POD's Bulgaria and Romania both could have easily restored their Royal families.

Thoughts?
