AHC: Republican Party folds

Simmilar to the thread involving the Democrats, in what situation could you see the Republican Party no longer existing? I could personally see it in FDR's term, a series of defeats in the 1860s, or maybe with a super-duper Obama presidency.

I see 1912 has the date, TR stays Progressive, say they pick up 23 seats in the House, 3 in the Senate in 1912, TR in 1914 runs for Senate (first time one could do so) and wins, the left wing of the GOP starts to more fully fold into the Progressives, much of the Dems left goes to TR as well, when the USA goes into the war the GOP gets blasted for being anti-war, the 1919 Red Scare leads a number of GOP members being called Communists(they're no even close but anti-war stands get them pulled down) TR having never gotten malaria and having not lost his son Quentin in the war is a healthy and fighting 61 years old when reelected as a progressive in 1920, the GOP staggers along through the 1920s bleeding members and votes, putting up folks like Harding and Hoover for president, dying out all together shortly before the election of 1940

Similar to black angel

You could have the Taftites (supporters of Robert A Taft) take over the party in 1940, this forces the more liberal elements of the party (Thomas Dewey ,Wendel Wilkey) out of the republican party. The more liberal/moderate GOP'ers flee to the democratic party. The core of the republican party that remains changes its name to the American Liberty Party.

In this scenario eisenhower just might be a democrat.

No Civil War PoDs?

A successful secession would likely wipe out the Republicans if an ACW PoD is allowed.

Other than that. Hmmm.... Progressives replace Republicans, Democrats become the party of the right, as already mentioned.
Edit: Mind you, that may be close to ASB, although surely not over the line.

Somehow the isolationists win control of the Party in 1940.

They are discredited as appeasers and whalloped heavily in 1942 and 44.

They fear Henry Wallace and accept truman in 48

Eisenhower runs as a democrat in 52. He beats Taft. If Eisenhower was alive today he would be a Democrat. Back then he thought about it. In 56 Eisenhower wins again over , what conservative? Rockfeller, and many republicans especially in the North east all become moderate democrats. You might see the rush of Dixiecrats becoming conservative Republicans a few years early after civil rights gets passed a lot faster.

Dathi is right; the easist way to get rid of the Republican Party is have the south successively succeed. There really aren't any other good POD in the before 1900 section, though if after 1900 is allowed then a Progressive Party stemming from either the 1912 or 1924 attempts could potentially displace the Republicans. The problem is that most Progressives were prohibitionists and/or isolationist which won't help them at the polls during the later part of prohibition or WWI/I.

Maybe a stillborn GOP due to more successful Know-Nothings? The Republicans weren't the only party to emerge from the Whigs, and they had a reasonably similar base to the Know-Nothings.

Isn't this in the wrong place i.e. its future history. If the tea party people take it over it is bound for electoral suicide
