What can be done to make England Protestant, but with a different branch like Lutheranism or Calvinism???
Edward VI had Calvinist associates iirc. If he lives longer Anglicanism could become Calvinist. What can be done to make England Protestant, but with a different branch like Lutheranism or Calvinism???
So many people talk about British Calvinism, which helped them becoming a superpower... why isn't it actually stronger?
My understanding is that before the Oxford Movement of the 19th century, the Anglican church was basically "low church" Calvinist, except that it had an episcopal organization instead of presbyterian. It was in the 19th century that the "high church" movement emerged and Anglicanism became more complicated in terms of doctrine.
It's a bit more complex than that. Movements in what we might call a High Church direction were what drove the unrest prior to the Bishops Wars and the Civil War/Commonwealth era, with Laud being the archetype of this.
Even before that, a tension between the Puritans and the Elizabethan church settlement can be easily viewed as a proto- Low-High church conflict.
Oxfordanism had an effect on the most modern form of Anglicanism, but it had precedents going back centuries.
