AHC: Progressive Eastern Europe and conservative Western Europe?

With a POD ranging from the start of WW1, have Eastern Europe be generally liberal and progressive while Western Europe remains conservative and traditionalist.

I'm afraid you would need a POD before 1900 for Western Europe(barring an extraordinary amount of success of *Fascism, or whatever), but Eastern Europe could have been somewhat more culturally progressive, were it not for the tragedy that was Stalinism(and, equally, the anti-leftism backlash that occurred in many Eastern European countries after the fall of the Soviet Union).

nah, eastern europe could really be more progressive than western europe and in some respects it was, for example on abortion and divorce.

a broader leftist movement centred on in Russia (pre WW1 POD) might lead to quite a progressive society in at least parts of Eastern Europe.

Well, okay. Can you direct me to any sources in that regard? I'll definitely be glad to take a look at them. :)

Prevent the authoritarian movements of the inter-war period, the Holocaust and Soviet occupation/communism. It was all of these things that led to either emigration or extinction of many liberal elements of those countries. One shouldn't forget that in the first decades of the 20th century, some central European cities were major centres for modernist art scenes and progressive political thinking.

Present-day cultural conservatism in Eastern Europe has a lot to do with the role the churches played in the civil rights movements against Communism. In a way, that explains why the most progressive-leaning countries in that region seem to be the ones with the most atheist populations: the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
