AHC: Progressive Conservative party of Canada remains a major party

Your challenge, should you accept it, is with no PoD before 1988, have the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada remain one of the top-two parties into the present day. Bonus points if the PCs win the 1993 Canadian election. Extra bonus points if the PoD is after the 1993 election. Go ahead!

I think you'd probably need to get rid of Mulroney for this to work.

If by "1988" you mean the '88 election, maybe have Mulroney announce his retirement shortly afterwards, saying something like "Well, free trade is my legacy, and now that that's secured, I can make my graceful exit."

Or maybe the Tories somehow lose that election, but with a respectable showing, and thus live to fight another day.

Also, having the CF-18 decision go the other way MIGHT help thwart the development of the Reform Party, who were sidelined by free-trade in '88 but of course came back with a vengeance in '93. But there were other "western alienation" issues at the time, so who knows.

I read somewhere that if Charest had won the leadership election and taken over instead of Kim Campbell, the PCs may have done better and held onto more of their seats.

Another option is that Meech Lake is a success. PCs are seen as quite successful, free trade, constitutional reform, etc. Maybe this will help Mulroney keep his grand coalition together...

What if there was no Chretien face ad? maybe the PCs come third, behind the Liberals(with a majority) and the Bloc Quebecois, but much stronger than IOTL.
