AHC: President Trump

With any POD, make Donald Trump either the current sitting US President or a former one.

You can make him either a Democrat, Republican or Independant.

Trump wouldn't be a Democrat, to do that you would have to fundamentally change who HE is and by that point you would no longer have the same Donald Trump running for president so that completely defeats the purpose.

Trump could run as an Independent if he could raise the funds for it, he would obviously throw in a lot of his own money but running for president is expensive and he wouldn't be able to foot the entire bill. I doubt his ability to be a major fundraiser, typically funding goes to people who are viewed as having the political capital to make a successful run in the first place. Trump might score a couple of wealthy donors but the amount he would need to raise would be... difficult to say the least. How he would shed the image of "weird guy from TV with bad hair" would probably involve earlier political runs for Congress or another high-profile elected position such as say... mayor of New York City, or Las Vegas where he owns real estate, either or.

I see Republican Party being his best bet though, they fit neatly with his views and he's willing enough to be the party's shill as it would seem.

Well 10 years ago he was pro-choice and called for a 1 time tax surcharge on the super rich so he could have been a democrat then.

Maybe a run in 2000 where Trump fills the Forbes role. My scenario is probably ASB though.

McCain does better against Bush and W. has a catastrophic gaffe that eliminates him from contention. But then McCain's doctor finds out that he has melanoma and that it has taken a turn for the worse - he has to step aside prior to the Republican Convention (and prior to his selection of a VP).

A party in disarray then turns to the 3rd place finisher in the primaries, a man that the "liberal media" says has no chance in November...

So a Republican-lite with a few ideas that are typically more Democrat leaning then. Either way, I can't see Trump as anything other than Independent or a Republican.

Was Trump a famous businessman back in 1992? Perhaps he could be Perot's vice president, if Perot wins. Then say, Perot dies, and Trump takes power.

I imagine having the Reform Party more successful, with Trump being elected Governor of New York under the Party's banner. When he makes a successful bid to the Presidency and wins.

Well maybe if Al Smith won in 1928 or 1932. Smith was a huge corporatist and was controlled by the likes of Johnny Raskob. Therefore, a Smith as President could lead to Trump as a Democrat. Heres a potential list of Presidents.
32. Al Smith/Albert Richie (D): 1933-1941
33. John Nance Garner/Joseph Guffey (D): 1941-1945
34. Thomas Dewey/Robert Taft (R): 1945-1953
35. Dwight Eisenhower/W. Averell Harriman (D): 1953-1961
36. Richard Nixon/Nelson Rockefeller (R): 1961-1969
37. Joseph Kennedy, Jr./George Smathers (D): 1969-1977
38. George Smathers/Scoop Jackson (D): 1977-1981
39. George H.W. Bush/Jack Kemp (R): 1981-1989
40. Bill Clinton/Donald Trump (D): 1989-1993
41. H. Ross Perot/Robert Dole (R): 1993-2001
42. Donald Trump/Al Gore (D): 2001-2009
43. Hillary Rodham/Barry Saturo (R): 2009-Present

I feel like adding him as a president in my planned dystopian TL but I'm starting to have too many Republicans as it is (whats up, GOP?).

Would he leave the business world at that point though?

Well to be fair, I was only offering a potential list. No one here actually thinks our ideas would happen, only that they could.

POD: Karl Rove fails to sell Grover Norquist on Governor Bush in the late 1990's due to the latter's profligate spending habits and other issues. The Right looks for someone other than McCain, and because Bush is not seen as a serious challenger for the nomination, Donald Trump jumps into the race. Trump gets the nomination after telling the Right what they want to hear while steering clear of Clinton-related issues. John Danforth is his running mate for balance, and Gore gets trounced in November after New York is called late into election night for Trump.
