AHC: President McGovern

Senator McGovern ran in 1984. After he got 3rd in Massachusetts he dropped out. He really wanted to run in 76, but the money was not there. In 84 it was more of lets get the message out and not a serious effort like he did in 72 and wanted to do in 76. I last talked to him on his birthday in July and never really asked him any history questions that day. He looked so good I had no idea he would not be around in a few months. I did ask him about his book about his life he was writing. He thought it would be done in a year. Sadly that may never happen. I don't know what happened to the current copy.
I appreciate hearing about the man from someone who knew him.

Hopefully his book was in a state where it can be published at least in part, because I'd love to read it. It's a shame he didn't get a chance to make a run in '76, and that his '84 effort was overlooked.

McGovern could have won if. . . He loses the primary to Muskie or Humphrey in 1972. Reagan won the nomination in 1976 and defeated Carter in 1976. If Reagan sent the troops into iran in 1979 instead of pulling out after the failure of desert one, that and inflation could lead to A McGovern/Mondale or McGovern/Jackson ticket in 1980.

I really hope that the book was far enough along that it can be edited and published in some form. It would be a shame if his recollections of his life were lost to history.
