AHC: President Lafayette

I admit this may or may not be very probable for a number of reasons, but i'm interested to see if this has previously been discussed and/or what people can come up with.

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, known simply as Lafayette in the United States, was a French aristocrat and military officer who became known as "The Hero of the Two Worlds" for his involvement in both the American and French revolutions. Highly venerated as a Major General in the US forces, he led troops in numerous battles and has been compared to George Washington for his military honor and personal integrity. IOTL, after he returned to France following his time in the US, he played a key role in the French Revolution and was heavily involved in French politics for the remainder of his life.

Your challenge is as the tin suggests: have Lafayette become President of the United States at any time after 1783.

It would help if the Constitution made the President a more ceremonial role like in a lot of European countries today.
