AHC: Post-1950s United Ireland

Unlikely as it seems, could you see an alliance between the Catholic church and the various fundamentalist Christian Unionists against a more aggressively progressive British Government that attempts to introduce abortion or gay marriage into NI? Possibly framed as some kind of federation of "good christians" in Ireland.

So, in an attempt to summarise what has bene postulated here, we'd need to find lessen the grip on political power that the UUP would have in Northern Ireland itself whilst avoiding the Troubles as much as possible. In addition, making joining the Republic of Ireland a more attractive option than remaining part of the UK, by general consensus of having a worse Winter of Discontent/trade union relations under a Bennite/Hard Left government.

That's about the jist of it, right?

Under the "make the Republic more attractive" factor in just what a basket case economically and socially it was during the period.

To make Ireland more attractive than the UK you'll probably have to drag the UK down (which won't be easy on Ireland either) rather than build Ireland up.

Ultimately, 60 million people will find subsidising 1 million people much easier than 4 million people will no matter how prosperous they are.
