AHC/PC/WI: Few of The African Countries Pull Off A Good Economic Miracle

Have a few countries in Africa pull off an economic miracle through industrialization (and therefore modernization) like India, China, Brazil, Mexico and other similar developing nations did. This has to be post-colonial obviously. And of course explain what needs to happen and what could happen if the event happens.

Egypt has all the potential to pull a South Korea/China if they can just get things going for them. It would need to be post Israel-Egypt peace, so post 1979 as Egypt would never be able to attract the necessary FDI while the potential for war was still there.

If Egypt could ask for economic assistance as opposed to military hardware in the Camp David treaty, they could reform the large corrupt bureaucratic nightmare that is everpresent in Egypt, institute subsidy reforms like Sadat tried to do, reform the legal system to allow FDI to come in, increase capital financing to SME's which employ the vast majority of the Egyptian workforce, they could very well undergo a economic miracle.

If it did happen, it would obviously change Middle Eastern politics massively, as large economy, big cultural output in the region plus a strong military for the region would turn Egypt into the regional power.

Honestly East African countries like Kenya and Tanzania have had relatively peaceful histories that they may pull one off since investors would be confident that violence will not sprout up.

If Ghana can avoid the instability of the sixties and later it is a possibility

Cabinda could do so as well if granted independence

Some countries like Nigeria and South Africa already did.

Err... What?

Nigeria is doing well financially because of its oil, but other than that "economic miracle" is hardly the wording I would have used for the place.

South Africa is also slipping badly since Nelson Mandela left power.

Sure compared to the kleptocratic hellholes that several other African nations were (are), or even the general level of poverty of much of subsaharan Africa, they look great, but compared to the rest of the world?

I would suggest Italy or Greece or Spain as comparisons for those countries, rather than South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan or West Germany which are the countries I think of when one says "economic miracle".

---
PS by "kleptocratic hellhole" I'm thinking of the likes of Mobutu's Zaire, Bokassa's Central African Empire, Idi Amin's Uganda, or possibly Mugabe's Zimbabwe is becoming.

Have the East African Community/Federation a few decades earlier, and the resulting nation would certainly attract investment.

Not to mention that Lagos is basically one giant slum and that the oil has given rise to insurgencies in the Niger Delta and ecological destruction.

South Africa is only barely chugging along. A highly unequal society further degrading due to neoliberal economic policies and the rise of alternative economies in Africa means that South Africa's development is essentially doomed without significant change.

Ethiopia has had 10+% economic grow rates for like a decade now, I think if they can keep the momentum for another 15 years we'll be talking about the Ethiopian economic miracle.

They had Mengitsu. A country so badly off that Band Aid had to collaborate to feed them. They've a long way to go.
