AHC/PC/WI: Better Treatment of Native Americans In Latin America

Is it possible for the native Americans to receive better treatment from their Spanish rulers than OTL? Is it possible that an alternate system of colonization be developed in a way that's more equal and less harsh to the native populations while at the same time still gives leeway for European settlers to take root? What needs to happen? And how does this affect the native populations?

Literally anyone other than Colombus runs the initial contact and management of Santo Domingo in 1493. It was his idea to enslave the natives rather than vassalize them as his cre wanted (fearing their numbers) and he who copied the Portuguese Factoria system that called for forces labor and semi serfdom. That'll set a much better precedent.

But wouldn't someone else later do precisely the same thing? I think, at best, it just postpones it.
What's needed is to keep the Americas under a somewhat tight control from the crown, and that seems difficult to achieve.

Or you could give the Church a more powerful role in ruling Spanish America. Voices like those of Antonio de Montesinos and Bartolome de las Casas were more often the not the only ones who stood up against the treatment of the Indios in the encomiendas.
