AHC/PC: US Oil?

Is it possible for the United States to have a nationalized oil company? How would a united US Oil Company affect US Politics?

Prevent the breakup of Standard Oil for another decade or two.

At the time of its dissolution it controlled a super majority of America's Oil Refining, Oil transit and Oil Pipeline capacity in addition to a sizable minority of its fields and physical drilling. Were said monopoly to continue a bit longer, it is quite likely that it would have purchased a majority of America's existing fields as well.

Such a super monopoly (considering that America was at the time the worlds largest producer of oil) could have swayed the public opinion in favor of complete nationalization.

Yeah thats what I thought, just making Standard Oil into US Oil.

McKinley lives and Roosevelt is confined to 8 years worth of a political ghetto before returning to NY politics in a much radicalized reformist form. The progressive movement continues to grow on the local level, and only obtains the presidency in the late 10's early 20's.

So a McKinley Presidency could've resulted in a US Oil?

Maybe.

I'm thinking a greater slow burn of the American progressive movement. They will lose their great early Champion in Roosevelt, and Williams Jennings Bryan is eternally unable to win over the north and the immigrant cities. The Progressives are therefore forced to act at the state level, and to continually endure the setbacks of a conservative supreme court killing their legislation. The trusts, with Morgan's watchful sheparding continue their march towards increasing consolidation.

This experience radicalizes the Progressive movement to a degree, breaking the bonds of traditional party loyalties. Notions of state owned utilities and infrastructure become increasingly popular, as do Americanized variations of "Fabian socialism" While they still believe in free enterprise, certain industries are deemed too important to leave to the private sector. Eventually the tide breaks and they obtain the presidency in addition to congressional super majorities. In addition to basic progressive reforms and the dissolution of the trusts, certain core industries are nationalized. Oil happens to be one of them.

That sounds like the making of a cool TL.

What about a similar structure to the The United States Railroad Administration (USRA) is implemented for the oil industry at the outset of the Great War, but without the guarantee return clause in the initial act? This delays any return and it becomes a permanent structure as it becomes increasingly vital and profitable, and eventually undergoes some corporate reforms to emerge as a massive, Government Owned Corporation (GOC).
