AHC/PC: More overseas American colonization

Would it be plausible for the USA to acquire colonies of its own apart from the events of the Spanish American War? If so, what would be good points of divergence?

Liberia would be a good start; more Pacific islands are relatively easy, maybe Okinawa?

Have John Adams succum to pressure from the Hamiltonians and declare war on France. Alexander Hamilton basically wanted to use this as an excuse to launch a campaign against the Spanish colonies in the New World.

I didn't know that about Hamilton. Would that have been during Directory or Consular France?

Directory, but I'm not sure you could call the result an American overseas empire. Even presuming it succeeds (and Miranda, who was the proponent of this overseas expansion, wasn't that successful in OTL), it would lead to an earlier, and different, independence movement.
