AHC/PC: Danish-Swedish support to the union during the civil war

so is that even possible what will the consequnces be? will the US even need the support? is it plausible?

Why would they support the Union? I could understand if the CSA attacked the Danish West Indies that would obviously serve as a good catalyst, but the CSA wouldn't be this stupid.

Even if they were the support would be minimal, mainly naval support for the blockade, or perhaps even a few troops on the ground. I can't see a way for the Swedes to get involved at all.

Not to mention that Denmark in particular has concerns much closer to home, like the ongoing constitutional troubles and the Schleswig-Holstein issue.

Denmark has its own problems in Schleswig, which resulted in the 1864 war against Prussia and reduction of Denmark from a third rate power to a fourth or even fifth rate power.

Sweden, at the time, was focused on helping Denmark, that was as far as Swedish foreign policies stretched. Sweden was at best a third rate power.

Both countries had decent navies of steam-powered small ship of the line/large frigates and were building ironclads. HMS John Ericsson was commissioned into the Swedish navy 1865.

The Swedish navy 1861:

6 sailing corvettes
3 sailing frigates
3 sailing ship of the line
7 steam corvettes
2 steam ship of the line

There was also a large squadron of steam gunboats, some of which were armoured from 1862 and onwards.

1862 a steam frigate was added.
1865 2 monitors were added.
1866 1 monitor was added.
1871 1 monitor was added.

HMS Stockholm (6x72pdr bomb gun, 64x30pdr, 1x18pdr carronade, 1x12pdr carronade, 1x6pdr landing gun).

There were plans to equip all the Ship of the Line with steam engines and screws, but they were scrapped due to a lack of money and experience showing that wooden ships are not the future. Instead, a steam frigate and three monitors were build 1862-1866.
