AHC: Pan-American Union

With a PoD after 1789, how do we get all of North and South America united in one supranational union by the end of the 20th century? Bonus points if you can get open borders and three or fewer currencies.

You can't. It's nigh impossible to get all of south america united under one nation (lookng at you Chile), much less get both continents. You could, I guess get North America united under one nation though.

Doesn't have to be a single nation, just a supranational union.

North America is simple enough with this early of a POD. Have the US win the War of 1812.

And done, all of North America under Washington. Well, except Alaska, unless the USA still buys it from Russia at some point.

Bahhhhh.

Bahhhhh.

The idea is to have the American continent united in a supranational union, not have the US go all Mongol on the Canadians and Mexicans.

Isn't Mexico in North America?

Uh yes. But most people seem to define North America as Canada and the USA.

Personally, I like looking at it the way the Germans do. and have both North and South America as a single landmass called "America". So, I guess the answer to this depends on how you define the continents.

That's not simple at all. That's really, really difficult for them. They gathered up all the strength they could muster, nearly going bankrupt in the process, and by the end of the war couldn't manage to occupy anything except for a small area at the ass end of Upper Canada. In the mean time their capital city was sacked and New England began to give serious consideration to secession. They ought to count their lucky stars things didn't get any worse for them.
I like me some tectonic plates.

That would put half of Japan in North America, though, and Panama outside it.

Yeah, having the US just conquer everything is definitely not what I was going for here (even if it was plausible).

Would expanding NAFTA southwards so in effect it is AFTA count or at least be a first step? Although that would be a post 1900 POD.
