AHC: Ottoman East Asia/Indonesia Colonies

I was wondering about a scenario where the Ottoman's decide to redirect so of their energy from Europe towards the East. Instead of letting Europeans gain influence and control in those areas, they push to take control of the trade routes?

What would allow this to happen?

It's hard to say. What POD are you considering? My best guess is you would need a POD that prevents a Shi'ite Persia, that at least frees up the need for Ottoman forces there, or perhaps even no Burgundian Inheritance or Spanish Habsburgs to loosen the burden in Europe.

PoD is 1514. Selim I goes on with his Persian campaign and adds Iraq to the Empire while the rest is vassalized. The Ottomans hav at least 10 years head start so at this point, if they are willing to put resources and timd in it, they can fight the Portuguese. It will take no less 50 years to completely secure the Indian Oceans if things go right. This has to include Ottoman presence near the Cape. A fort.

Ottoman presence in the East Indies is locals remaining in power while formally declaring the Ottomans as overlords.
