AHC: other Romance speaking countries are called Romania

With a POD in the early Middle Ages, have France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Belgium or Spain become known as Romania.

If Slavic tribes moved further west in Europe and assimilated large areas, would the remaining Romance-language-speaking areas tend to be called by their now distinct language from their neighbors?

If you allow early middle ages to be from 500AD onwards, the Frankish Empire could become the (Western) Roman Empire -later Romania- especially if the Byzantines collapse and get conquered by Muslims.

Alternatively, (alt-)Napoleon is declared the new Roman Emperor, and forms the Empire of Romania (basically Napoleonic France plus conquests.

For Spain/Portugal, this would probably have to be quite early, unless the you get a super-mega-Habsburg wank that decides to declare the restoration of the Roman Empire.

As for Italy, maybe the Italian nationalists lean heavily into Classicism, proclaiming the revival of the Roman Empire (Romania) instead of the Kingdom Italy.

Easiest way: Charlemagne's Holy Roman Empire lasts longer, has a stronger conceptual connection to the old Roman Empire, and becomes a !French speaking nation eventually called Romania.

Most fun way: The Latin Empire lasts longer, Greece becomes an at least partly French/Venetian speaking state that retains its original name: Imperium Romaniae, or Romania.

A later change.
Perhaps Naples/Sicily gain Latin Romania, a Neapolitan King promoting themselves as Emperor of Rome will promote the Roman titles too.

If the House of Flanders formed a realm similar to Charles the Bold's Burgundy and able to challenge France, they might bring back their claim to the Latin Empire. Maybe get elected as Holy Roman Emperors

Maybe a non-theocratic state in Latium?
