AHC Opposite Vietnam.

Is it possible for the Soviet Union to do what the US did in Vietnam and the US do what the Soviets did, somewehre in the world? I don't mean giving a couple of Stingers to Afghan tribesmen. I'm talking supplying an underdog country with SAMs and jet fighters to defend against Soviet bombing attacks while infiltrating and supporting a guerilla war against a communist country with a large Soviet contingent on the ground.

The soviets cannot do what America did in Vietnam. North Vietnam was mostly leaning towards communism while South Vietnam was ruled a Catholic dictator who seemed more concerned with raiding temples than fixing the problems of his own country. The only way for the soviets to have their Vietnam in Vietnam would be for them to support the south and America support the north. But that is ASB and would require an opposite cold war.

It is possible however for the Soviets to involve themselves in another country with civil war and get hammered for it.

Tonsofun, I didn't think it would be in Vietnam, I said somewhere in the world but misspelled somewhere.

Tallwingedgoat, I know, I wonder if they could support a country that can fly a few jet fighters and fire SAMs at a low enough level that the Soviets will stay in the fight without going berserk.

If you can accept proxies, AQngola can be looked at.

Cuban soldiers of some 55,000. Massive hardware shipments from Russia, East German pilots and a fair amount of Russian advisors. The highest ranking Soviet general outside of Russsia itself was in Angola.

If you can accept that UNITA was funded by South Africa (and others as well), and accept that US/UK were fine with South Africa fighting "their" war against Soviet, you may have an example.

Not sure if it is not stretching it a bit, though.

I think the OP means the USSR supporting a communist movement in overthrowing the capitalist government. like what the US did in Vietnam, and a couple of dozen other countries.

Cambodia, Malaya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Finland come to mind.

All had strong communist movements in the country during the cold war. Some still do. Finland didn't really but its bordering the USSR so definitly potential if they decide to intervene.

US trained and equipped the Pakistani air force, and they shot down both Soviet and Afghan aircraft.

My apologies for misreading.
Angola seems most likely. But if it turns bad it could make the Soviets very wary of getting into Afghanistan. No Soviet invasion of Afghanistan could make a very different central asia.
