AHC: One code to rule them all - a football challenge

IOTL, there are quite a variety of football codes - association, rugby league, rugby union, American, Canadian, Aussie rules, and Gaelic being the big ones.

Your challenge is to have a single popular code develop that is played worldwide combining elements of all the above codes. (Ie, simply having straight association football replace gridiron, rugby, and Aussie rules won't work.)

In the post-war era Australia finds it self divded by the Barassi Line with high post-war immigration forward thinking Australians decide to over come this by combining the best bits of the best three codes, Aussie Rules, Rugby Union and Rugby League. The combination consists of the larger teams and pitches of Aussie Rules along with the handball method of passing. Rugby Legue contributes it's tradition of professionalism and the limited tackle rule though it is increased to 12. Everything else is drawn from Rugby Union. This new Combined Football quickly sweeps first Australia and then the rest of Oceania dominated the region by 1975 with all other codes reduced to minor amateur levels. This new code is exported to Britain by Antipodeans on their OE's and quickly takes the country by storm. The turning point is when Brain Clough junks Andrew Football as game for wimps and converts to Combined Football.
With the dawn of the cable era Americans finally get a chance to see Combined Football in it's glory. Realising that this codes is far superior to Gridiron they abandon their pads and start to play a mans game. The code sweeps North America during the 80's and all the other leagues disband in despair at collapsing audience figures, though Ice Hockey manages to hang on in Canada.
Hispanic immigrants to the US spread Combined Football to South America during the 90's while the fall of the Berlin Wall see's it take over Eastern Europe while the end of Apartheid sees the Blacks abandon Soccer and the White's Rugby to adopt the combined code. Finally the code sweeps through Europe as fans realise that the Andrex Football is rubbish and played by softies.

As the year 2000 dawns the world is united in it's love of Combined Football.

British Public Schools (which are actually private boarding schools for confused Yankees like myself) develop an informal league where they can play one another in the early 19th century. Rather than develop their own unique games (Rugby at Rugby; Association Football at Winchester) they agree on a single loose code so that they can play together.

Winchester College plays Winchester College Football or WinCoFo or Winkies while Association or Andrex Football is derived from the game played at Westminister and Charterhouse but it's a good idea.

Whoops, my mistake. For some reason I always thought Association Football got it's start at Winchester. At least I didn't mess up which game started at Rugby!

You get the idea though- some organization between the schools may prevent such different games.

Winchester College is the greatest school on earth, Westminister is a day-school where Nick Clegg went, admittedly it is next door to Parliament which is nice.
