AHC: Nova Scotian Seperatism

I imagine that independence would be preceded by an intense campaign of terrorism targeting Canadian cultural institutions such as Tim Hortons.

Basically have Nova Scotia want independence from Canada, with any POD after Confederation.

If it became an haven of our acadians brothers and sisters, a large majority maybe... An anglo-canadian dictature opprerssing the minorities, by example..

Third world country, terrorism..

Maybe the maritimes could win independence if Quebec separated and left them isolated from Ontario.
If Quebec is separated, there would be a partition, and I'm thinking that Canada being connected to the Maritimes would be a priority. Either way, what would the incentive be? The Maritimes are generally the poorest region of the country....their separation would only cause them grief.

And there still is a Naval Route.

You mean like OTL? Where Nova Scotia hated being brought into the same federation as the Province of Canada and voted in a separatist party in the first election they could? The Anti-Confederates won 36 of 38 seats in the Nova Scotian assembly in the 1867 provincial election, and 18 of the 19 seats Nova Scotia had in the federal election. The British told Nova Scotia to suck it up, and the movement died out.

Thats actually awesome. So just have them respond in the negative and we could actually have Nova Scotian separatists.

But that's not quite the same, surely? In that scenario, Nova Scotia has a back-up - if it doesn't Confederate with Canada it remains a British colony and gets bankrolled from London. If it actually goes independent later on in history as most of the posters here are indicating, it doesn't have that parachute.

An easier accomplishment would be stronger Cape Breton separatism. There is a certain amount of it now, and rather a lot of anti-provincial government sentiment in popular discourse. This all goes back to 1820, when the island (which had been a separate colony since the 1780s) was rather unceremoniously merged with the mainland. Of course, they never wanted to be independent, but just their own colony (a sentiment which may have changed as time progressed).

Have Quebec gain independence in the 1970's through terrorism, and an actual revolution. They declare themselves the Quebec Republic (or something of the sort), they go to war against Canada (and the First Nation People in Quebec) The fail to canquer Ontario (to focre Canada to accept their independence, not becuase they want it) becuase of help from...The rest of the world (save the Soviets, and Eastern Europe). At the same time the new Quebec army races to secure the Atlantic Coast by conquering Newfounland, New Brunswick, PEI, and Novia Scotia. American Amries from New england push to New Brunswick and Novia Scotia to stop them from falling into Quebec or Canadian hands (Nixon really hated Canada and officialy cut off 'special relations' with us). When America pushes Quebec out of Acadia they created a new puppet state of Novia Scotia (with covers all of Acadia) do to international pressure of wanting to give the lands back to Canada. Nixon says he'll allow Acadians to vote on the issue, independece, or rejoin Canada. The vote is rigged so Novia Scotia stays independent of Canada and has the militayr, and econimic support of America.

I know it's next to impossible, but still a fun scenario.

For some reason, Nova Scotia and Quebec (at the time Lower Canada) are combined (because of the Acadians being just as french as the Lower Canadians?). Later on they get more seats for a higher population (encouraged french immigration?) and then the Bloc Quebecois alias (which is almost inevitable) can get enough seats to separate. It is not exactly independent separatism but it would work. Although the odds are just as astronomical as any other option here.

I could guess Nova Scotia could try to break off to become a US state out of spite. Essentially it would be the Texas revolution but with Canada/British Empire instead of Mexico.
