AHC: Norway get's a colony or two

Someone should do a wank for that place.

I really think an Antarctica as a Norwegian colony could work. If they were continuously seen as Norwegian until WWII and the Cold War turns up, and the Norwegians are good pro-Americans, then the US would be happy to uphold the colony with "contracts" that allow their companies to mine in the continent, along with Norwegian oil corporations. A gloomy, but possible outcome.

That is true, but only if you assume that the Great Powers are somehow interested in Anatarctica. 1912 is just before WWI. If Norway waits until 1914, there is no grat power havin time and inclination do deal with a giant iceberg. And Norway could simply join WWI on the side of the Entente - in exchange for Britain recognizing their claims.

Also, you don't need to put much garrison in a country nobody wants to have. And you only need to guard the parts where an invasion is logistically possible.

This isn't going to happen beofre 1970/80. If Norway manages to hold on Antarctica until then, I don't see anyone being able to doubt Norway's claim on these lands.

That's plausible - to me anyway - though imperialism didn't/doesn't always work on logic.....

As far as the garrison goes, it might just consist a permanent base camp, built over the land mass and populated by deputized Norwegians who seasonally rotate in for a mix of scientific research, whaling, sealing, prospecting, etc. (now serving as (acting) Guvernør.....)

Norway was the principle user of South Georgia island, the grytviken whaling station. They could get de jure control of South Georgia in exchange for Norway joining the allies.

aside from trivial bits of the antarctic, I think the only real options are, as stated above by someone, for Norway to keep her North Atlantic territories when the various splits after the Kalmar Union happened.
