North Korea is, for all intents and purposes, like a black hole on Earth. It is a famine state and a slave state. It's land is underdeveloped, it's people starving and malnourished (the average North Korea is six inches shorter than the South Korean), and the population languishes under an authoritarian regime rivaling Orwell's Oceania. It cuts them off from the world totally, and keeps them in the dark about their own situation and the outside realities of the world, filling them and convincing them with propaganda. In their mind, no one can question that Dear Leader was born perfectly in auspicious circumstances where nature itself paid homage to him like Disney animals dressing Cinderella, or that Americans and the Japanese are absolutely evil, or that the South Koreans are interbreeding with inferior races and the North Koreans are pure and must defend their racial purity (North Koreans are very racist, and of note a Black Cuban diplomat was nearly killed by them once and pregnant Koreans returning to the homeland from China are forced to have abortions). North Koreans are also taught that the reason the US gives them aid is not because they are a starving, barely alive nation; it is because the United States fears Dear Leader, and is paying homage to his might like Barbarians paying tribute to a mighty King.
It's like Plato's Cave; they are presented with this world, and buy it wholesale. And their beliefs about the world and themselves, but especially about themselves for the purposes of this thread, are totally disillusional and unwarranted (laughably and tragically).
The challenge here, and I do believe it is a challenge given the regime, its obvious lack of concern, and its lack of need to help the nation and people given its brainwashed them so thoroughly about them being so poorly off, is to actually make North Korea well off. Not necessarily exorbitantly well off (and I don't see how it could be), but well enough off where it has a reasonable level of living and development, or at least one much better than the absolutely abysmal situation it has in reality.
