Not doable.

It was fear of U.S. nuclear weapons that kept the Soviets for the first half of the Cold War from asserting themselves over Western Europe.

Not really, depending on what you mean by imply by 'assert themselves'.

A war with conventional, chemical, and biological weapons could be almost as damaging for both sides.
 
Easy, the period doesn't last very long until nukes show up, with real life physics they are pretty much inevitable by 1950

In any case Japan wasn't going to last long enough to be invaded even without nukes, it was that screwed
